Historically, the Domain was important for providing Speakers Corner every Sunday, similar to Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park, London. This provided the concept of free speech, where any person may turn up unannounced and talk on almost any subject they wish, although they are likely to be heckled by people holding opposing views.
