The Document can be considered an evolved form of Kojima's previous "Pilot Disk" concept (a pre-release demo version of a game containing development information about the game's production, as seen with the first console releases of Snatcher and Policenauts in Japan). It contains concept plans, artwork, video footage and trailers of Metal Gear Solid 2 that illustrate how it was made from start to completion. It also includes interactive 3D models of all the characters and mechanical devices involved in the game, all of the interactive 3D cutscenes and the storyboards that were used to plan them out, the final script, all of the in-game music, and five playable VR missions that preview those featured in Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance. The product is considered a major step towards video games being an accepted artform, due to its expansive content which allows the game to be truly studied and appreciated, especially in an academic context.
