The Dark was the eighth ' set and the fourth expansion set, released in August, 1994. The set continued the story begun in and recounted the aftermath of the events of that set. The 119-card set had a dark, sacrificial theme, though it did not add any new keywords like did.

  • Ball Lightning - A quick, efficient, powerful creature that symbolized red in Magic: power in short bursts. The much beloved creature was reprinted in and .
  • Leviathan - This massive blue creature was the first to break the double-digit power/toughness barrier.
  • Sorrow's Path - This card is widely regarded as being the worst land ever printed.
  • Maze of Ith - This land card's ability to remove creatures from combat was powerful enough that it was eventually restricted.
