The Crow

The Crow is a comic book series created by James O'Barr. The series was originally written by O'Barr as a means of getting over his girlfriend's death at the hands of a drunk driver. It was later published in 1989, and became an underground success, with some movie studios seeking the rights to adapt it to film. It was adapted into a film in 1994 (see The Crow) with three sequels, a remake and a series also created.

The story revolves around a man named Eric, who was murdered by a gang of street thugs who accosted him and his fianc?e, Shelly, when they were stranded on a roadside by car trouble. Eric was shot and killed by the gang's leader, T-Bird. Shelly was gang-raped and viciously beaten, later dying from her injuries. One year later, Eric is resurrected by a spectral crow to seek out vengeance on the murderers, methodically stalking and killing them. Eric stays in the house that he shared with Shelly when not on the hunt; he spends most of his time there lost in memories of Shelly. Her absence is torturous for him, and he stays in hideous mental and emotional pain. This is an ironic situation since he cannot feel physical pain and injuries he suffers heal very rapidly, leaving him scarred but intact, even when he mutilates himself. The crow chastises him for dwelling on his loss, seeing his pining as useless self-torture that distracts him from his purpose.
