Its title had become a household phrase referring to the centres of government and power after Snow coined it in his earlier novel, "Homecomings". (A slightly rueful Foreword to "The Corridors of Power" expresses the hope that he is at least entitled to use his own cliché.)

"Corridors" is concerned with the attempts of an English MP to influence the country's policy on nuclear weapons in the 1950's. It is not perhaps among the more successful "Strangers and Brothers" novels. As a novelist, Snow excels at describing minute shifts of power among small groups of men in enclosed settings. For this reason, the three books set in a fictional Cambridge college contain much more memorable characters.
