The Constant Wife
The Constant Wife, a parlor comedy play, was written by W. Somerset Maugham in 1927. The title character, Constance Middleton, is a totally self-possessed London doctor's wife. Confronted with her husband's infidelity, she establishes economic independence ("the only real independence") while respecting but confounding every other character in the play.
