Justin has recently had suspicions that his activist wife only married him as a way into British diplomatic circles in Africa and was having affairs behind his back. This turns out to be the result of mistaken snippets of conversation and correspondence that were actually part of a ruthless plan by Tessa to get help and information from an unscrupulous colleague of her Justin's who is infatuated with her.

Ignoring friendly warnings, grim threats, and physical assaults, Justin discovers that Tessa found out that a large pharmaceutical company distributing AIDs tests and treatments is simultaneously testing a tuberculosis drug with severe side effects. They are covering up the side effect problem and making improvements to the drug in anticipation of a worldwide outbreak of tuberculosis that they would be in a position to profit from.
