In 1978 the newspaper was at the centre of the Muldergate Scandal, so-named after Dr Connie Mulder, the Cabinet minister who was first implicated. Then-State President B.J. Vorster was ultimately also implicated in the use of a slush-fund to finance The Citizen, the only major English language newspaper that was favourable to the ruling party.
