The stage musical opened in 1978 and the film was released in 1982. Both versions feature songs by Carol Hall; the movie version also featured two songs by its star, Dolly Parton, including "I Will Always Love You", which reached #1 on the country music charts, and would be recorded as a cover version by Whitney Houston a decade later, becoming a huge mainstream hit. The movie version also starred Burt Reynolds. The original Broadway cast starred Carlin Glynn and Henderson Forsythe. The story is about a brothel in Texas in the late 1970s. It has operated for more than a century but a crusading television reporter calls for it to be shut down, leading to its demise.
