The Architects' Collaborative

The Architects' Collaborative (TAC) was an American architectural firm founded by Walter Gropius in 1945 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The original co-founders included Norman C. Fletcher, Jean B. Fletcher, John C. Harkness, Sarah P. Harkness, Robert S. MacMillan, Louis A. Macmillen, and Benjamin C. Thompson. After this establishment, TAC would become one of the most well-known and respected architectural firms in the world.

TAC's first project was the result of a competition design between the Harknesses and the Fletchers. It was the dormatories and dining facilities at Smith College (1945-1947). Following this, the firm would go on to create some of the most architecturally respected projects. Some of these works include the Harvard Graduate Center (1949-1950), Pan-American World Airways Building (1958-1963), Overholt Thoracic Clinic (1954), University of Baghdad (1957-1960), Peter Thacher Junior High School (1949), John F. Kennedy Federal Building (1963-1965), The Walter Gropius Archives (1979) and the Interbau Apartment Blocks (1957).

Owing to financial difficulties, TAC was closed in March 1995. Many archives and architectual libraries worked fast to retrieve TAC's drawings and records. Most of them were purchased by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and were archived in some of their libraries.
