The single was co-written and co-produced by Carey and the Flyte Time team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The song was performed with the R&B singer Joe and the boy band 98 Degrees. The romantic ballad provides a metaphorical closure for Carey's album Rainbow, as it is the rainbow (happiness) that comes after the storm (relationship problems). The song was inspired by Carey's boyfriend at the time, Luis Miguel.
