Thanatopsis is a poem written by William Cullen Bryant when he was just seventeen years of age. It is generally considered the first important American poem. When it was first published in the North American Review, it was considered a hoax. Richard Henry Dana, author of Two Years Before the Mast, told the editor "No one, on this side of the Atlantic is capable of writing such verses."
