Texas Christian University


 

Texas Christian University (abbreviated TCU) is a private, coeducational university located in Fort Worth, Texas. TCU is affiliated with the Disciples of Christ. Its mascot is the horned frog. Its school colors are purple and white.

History

Brothers Addison and Randolph Clark founded the AddRan Male and Female Academy in 1873 after returning from service in the Civil War. The first coeducational learning institution college in the Southwest (a remarkably progressive step for a time when most schools were for either men or women exclusively), the Academy's first class included thirteen enrolled students.

The school was established in Thorp Springs, Texas, but financial difficulties resulted in a move to Waco from 1895 to 1910. The academy was renamed Texas Christian University in 1902. To honor the founding brothers, one of its schools is named the AddRan College of Humanties and Social Sciences.

After a fire at the Waco campus in 1911, the University relocated to its current home at Fort Worth, where it still thrives today.
