Terrence Malick

Terrence Malick (born November 30, 1943, Waco, Texas) is an enigmatic American film director, screenwriter, and producer.

Biography and Career

The son of an oil company executive, Malick grew up in Oklahoma and Texas and worked on oil fields. He graduated from St. Stephens High School in Austin, Texas, where he played football. He studied philosophy at Harvard University. After graduating he went to Magdalen College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He had a disagreement with his advisor over his philosophy thesis on Heidegger, and left prior to graduating. Moving back to the United States, he taught philosophy at Massachusetts Institute of Technology while freelancing as a journalist. He got his start in film after earning an MFA from the AFI Conservatory in 1969, directing Lanton Mills.

After working as a screenwriter and script doctor, Malick directed Badlands and Days of Heaven. Following the release of Days of Heaven, Malick moved to France, where he disappeared from public view for 20 years. He returned to film in 1998 with The Thin Red Line.

Malick considered making his fourth project a film about Che Guevara, and wrote a screenplay for it, but later relinquished it to director Steven Soderbergh. Malick's most recent film is The New World, which is partly based on the story of Pocahontas and is scheduled for release in November 2005. It has been reported that he is in negotiations to write and direct the film Tree of Life, which will see him reteaming with Colin Farrell.
