Ternary is the base- numeral system. Ternary digits are known as trits (trinary digit), analogous to bit. This system is also known as trinary.

Although ternary most often refers to a system in which the three digits, , and , are all nonnegative integers, the adjective also lends its name to the balanced ternary system, useful for comparison logic.
