Temperance movement
A Temperance Movement (see definition of temperance) attempts to greatly reduce the amount of alcohol consumed or even prohibit its production and consumption entirely.
Summary
Temperance movements have existed, and continue to exist, around the world. They tend to arise in periods of rapid social change and social disorganization, during which time many social problems --including joblessness and domestic violence-- are seen as resulting from alcohol use (which tends to be equated with alcohol abuse).

A common pattern is for a temperance movement to first try to persuade people to abstain from alcoholic beverages by becoming teetotalers. The failure of this strategy then leads them to advocate the prohibition of alcohol by force of law.
