Ted Templeman


 

Ted Templeman (born October 24, 1944) is an influential American record producer. In the mid-1960s, Templeman began his career in the Santa Cruz area as a drummer playing in a band called "The Tikis" which also included Randy Newman as a member. At the suggestion of Lenny Waronker, the group sought to changed their name and in 1966 Harpers Bizarre was born, with Templeman switching to guitar and vocals. In 1967 the group released an album Feelin' Groovy (Warner Bros. 1693), which had some material later covered by Newman on his 1972 album Sail Away. Harpers Bizarre disbanded in 1970.

It was in 1970 that Templeman (at the suggestion of Waronker) had started working as a producer for Warner Brothers Records. In that year he produced the classic eponymous The Doobie Brothers album, followed the next year by the Doobies' Toulouse Street album which achieved platinum record status on the strength of the hit single "Listen to the Music". Templeman was to continue a long professional relationship with The Doobie Brothers, producing many more hit singles and albums for the group.

In 1973 Templeman produced another classic, the eponymous Montrose album, released in November 1973. It was Templeman who introduced guitarist and group leader Ronnie Montrose to an up and coming singer, Sammy Hagar. The Montrose album is considered a benchmark in the 1970's hard rock genre.

In 1977 Templeman saw a performance of an relatively unknown group, Van Halen. It was Templeman and his collegue, Mo Ostin who convinced Warner Bros. to sign the group to the label and Templeman produced their eponymous first album. The group utilized Templeman's production talents through their first six albums and established themselves as one of the worlds' biggest selling acts of the late 70's and early 80's. When Van Halen singer David Lee Roth quit the band, Templeman went on to produce Roth's first two solo albums, Eat 'Em and Smile and Skyscraper.

Other artists produced by Templeman include Van Morrison (Tupelo Honey, St. Domenics Preview), Captain Beefheart (Clear Spot), Little Feat (Sailin' Shoes), Michael McDonald (If Thats What It Takes), Aerosmith (Done With Mirrors) and Eric Clapton (Behind the Sun).

By the late 1980s Templeman began to work less, and only very seldom since the early 1990s has he done any original production, preferring to concentrate his efforts in compilations of his earlier work.
