She was the original security officer of the Enterprise-D. Born on Turkana IV, a colony world which fell into anarchy after it was abandoned by the Federation, she learned to defend herself on the streets and avoid the gangs. While the crew of the Enterprise was under the influence of a virus which caused people to lose control of their actions, she and Data were sexually intimate. She was killed by an evil force known as Armus on Vagra II less than a year after the Enterprise-D began its mission. After her death, Lieutenant Worf replaced her as security chief aboard the Enterprise.

Crosby's most notable returns to the series were during the series finale, All Good Things... (which involved time travel), and in the third season episode Yesterday's Enterprise, showing an alternate universe and time-traveling. The Yar from the alternate universe returned to the 'normal' time stream and eventually bore a half-Romulan daughter named Sela. Sela herself appeared in the fourth and fifth seasons, played, unusually, by Crosby. Between these roles and a second-season archival-footage appearance, Crosby appeared in every season of Star Trek: The Next Generation except the sixth.
