Born in the Bronx, New York to an Irish father and a Jewish mother on October 15, 1954, she studied acting with Lee Strasberg and Uta Hagen, and supported herself in New York as an Arthur Murray dance instructor. She also appeared in television commercials for Clairol and Ultra Brite.
