Tanning is the process of making leather from skin. This is commonly done with the acidic compound tannin, which prevents normal decomposition and often imparts color.

- Metonymically, like hiding, tanning may also refer to any corporal punishment (e.g. paddling, whipping, as in the expression 'to tan one's hide'), hard enough to clearly colour (usually bright red, or even purple, later often 'black and blue') the painfully beaten skin of the victim.
