Business Career
In 2005, he quietly bought up the shares of Fuji Television and attempted a hostile takeover of the company. Although Japan has few laws concerning defensive procedures for target companies, a compromise was arranged where he became a joint director of the company, and Japan has since hastily introduced M&A laws based on those of the United States.

Horie is criticized in conservative Japanese business circles for his unconventional methods including his informal attire. In a country where neckties are the norm for businessmen, he is frequently seen wearing T-shirts or unbuttoned collared shirts.
