Taj Mahal
:This article is about the Indian monument. For other uses, see Taj Mahal (disambiguation)
Origins of the name
Most sources suggest that "Taj Mahal" is a shorter variant of "Mumtaz Mahal"...the name of the woman in whose memory it was built. The name "Taj" is a Persian word (meaning "crown") while "Mahal" is Arabic in origin (meaning "place"). Typically the building is simply and evocatively referred to as The Taj.
