The musical received its premiere on London's West End at the newly opened Venue Theatre on January 29, 2002, and transferred to Broadway in New York City on November 13, 2003. It was the first Broadway production by Rosie O'Donnell, with a rewrite by Charles Busch. The musical was a flop on Broadway, closing after 100 performances, and was an embarrassment and money-loser for O'Donnell, who put up much of the investment to produce the show. Nonetheless, Boy George was nominated for a Tony award for his score for the musical.
