Syriacs (in Syriac Suryoye/Sury?ye) are those people who live in or originally come from a number of countries in the Near East (Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, some neighbouring countries), have in the first centuries AD been Christianized, and in majority use the Syriac language (the Aramaic dialect once spoken in Edessa, what is now ?anl?urfa, Turkey) as their language of liturgy and literature. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
