Syriac Christianity
Syriac Christianity is a culturally and linguistically distinctive community within Eastern Christianity. It has its roots in the Near East, and is represented by a number of Christian denominations today.
Churches of the Syriac tradition
- The East Syrian Rite:
- The Assyrian Church of the East (sometimes called Nestorian).
- The Chaldean Catholic Church, an Eastern Rite Catholic church.
- The West Syrian Rite:
- The Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch (sometimes called Jacobite).
- The Syrian Catholic Church of Antioch, an Eastern Rite Catholic church.
- The Syriac Maronite Church of Antioch, an Eastern Rite Catholic church.
- The Byzantine Churches of Antioch:
- The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch.
- The Melkite Greek Catholic Church, an Eastern Rite Catholic church.
- The Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, in communion with the Syriac Orthodox Church.
- The Indian Orthodox Church, independent from the Syriac Orthodox Church.
- The Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, an Eastern Rite Catholic church.
- The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Rite Catholic church.
- The Chaldean Syrian Church of the East, in the tradition of the Assyrian Church of the East.
Syriac Christians were involved in the mission to India, and many of the ancient churches of India are in communion with their Syriac cousins. These Indian Christians are known as Saint Thomas Christians. These include
