It is scored for an orchestra consisting of two flutes, piccolo, two oboes, cor anglais, two clarinets, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, two bassoons, double bassoon, four French horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, wood blocks, tambourine, triangle, snare drum, cymbals, bass drum, tam-tam, timpani, harp, piano and strings (the usual first and second violins, violas, cellos and double basses). As is usual for symphonies, the piece is in four movements:

The symphony was premiered on January 13, 1945 in the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory by the USSR State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Prokofiev himself. It was very well received, and has remained one of the composer's more popular works.
