The word Symbolist has several meanings.

  • In art history, Symbolism was a 19th-century movement rejecting realism.
  • In Christianity, symbolists believe that the bread and wine used in the Eucharist are symbols, and not literally the flesh and blood of Christ; see Transubstantiation.
