The original station at Swiss Cottage, whose platforms were roughly above the present ones, was opened by the Metropolitan Railway on April 13 1868. This was the terminus of a branch from Baker Street. The northern extension from here to Finchley Road opened on June 30 1879. With the opening of the new Swiss Cottage station, the nearby Swiss Cottage Metropolitan Line station closed on August 18 1940.
