Due to high rates of crime and urban decay in its northern localities (Whalley, Guilford, and Port Kells), Surrey has gained a rather unsavoury reputation among surrounding municipalities and abroad. A stigma is attached to those who bear such labels as ?surrey-boy? and ?surrey-girl,? implying that they are of a lower quality and class, often associated with gang violence, the drug-trade and prostitution, and thus should not be trusted and avoided. Obviously such overarching claims are cruel and absurd in virtue of their prejudice; nonetheless, it is often difficult to gain acceptance when visiting neighbouring communities while being ?from Surrey?. Many residents will try and distance themselves from such notoriety by claiming to be from lesser-known localities ?outside of Surrey? such as Fleetwood or Newton (neither are actually located outside of Surrey). Others will make a point of distinguishing between North Surrey and South; the latter is known for its much higher average income and standard of living. Some from Surrey advertise their origins as a form of status and pride. Advertising it through conversation, car decals, t-shirts as well as through other means. As with most people from martial cultures, many from Surrey associate their perceived toughness and hardness relating directly to thier social status; and those not considered tough or hard enough to have low social status and to be of lower class. This often causes culture shock when members of Surrey go to places such as Kitsilano whose metrosexual-based culture diametrically discords with Surrey's martial one.
