Anastasio decided to gather a number of players he'd long wanted to record with, a "dream lineup."

Though never explicitly stated on the record or its notes, the album was a sort of tribute to jazz composer and bandleader Sun Ra, an Anastasio favorite.

Some passages are reminiscent of Sun Ra's music, and Anastasio has stated of Sun Ra, "A lot of times, I think he was the pinnacle. He was as good as it got. His values remained pure for his entire life, and there's something to be said for that." http://www.penduluminc.com/MM/articles/trey.html

Furthermore, several of the performers on Surrender to the Air--Allen, Choice and Ray--had performed with Sun Ra.
