Surface combatant
Surface Combatants are naval fighting ships which fight each other primarily by their own armament, rather than through aircraft. encompassing five major classes grouped by size and/or weapon systems and mission. Surface combatants include cruisers, destroyers, frigates and corvettes, plus several outdated types including Ships of the Line, sailing frigates, battleships, battlecruisers and monitors.

Surface combatants are a subset of warships. Amphibious assault ships, aircraft carriers, and mine hunters are examples of vessels which are not Surface Combatants but are warships.
