Super Mario 64 DS

Super Mario 64 DS is an enhanced remake of 1996's Super Mario 64 and one of the launch titles for the Nintendo DS. This remake features various new characters, levels, modes of play and minigames, much of which takes advantage of the features of the DS system.

Gameplay

New Stars/Courses

There are 150 Power Stars in the game — an addition of 30 from the original. Each of the 15 main courses from the original game now has 8 stars to be obtained, and there are now 30 castle secret stars, up from the original's 15. 2 stars are restricted to Yoshi, 18 stars are restricted to Mario, 15 stars are restricted to Luigi, and 13 stars are restricted to Wario. Collecting all 150 stars enables players to use a cannon to shoot to the roof, however, unlike Super Mario 64 there is now no Yoshi on the roof, since he is now a playable character (and Yoshi couldn't meet Yoshi). Luigi's last minigame rabbit can be found up here.

Types of new Power Stars

Switch Star - Upon pressing a star-shaped switch, a Power Star appears in a glass sphere somewhere in the level. The player must run to the star before the timer expires. Switch Stars are featured in Courses 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 13, 14, and 15, the Goomboss battle, all three King Bowser levels, and The Secret Under the Moat.

5 Silver Stars - The player must collect five Silver Stars scattered around the level for a Power Star to appear. Each time the player is hit by an enemy, he/she loses one silver star and must recollect it. Silver stars are featured in Courses 1, 7, 8, 10, 11, and 14, as well as Sunshine Isles and Battle Fort.

The only course that does not have either of the new types of stars is course 12, and courses 8 and 14 are the only ones which have both.

Course bosses

All the bosses that a player must beat to earn a star or a character:

  • King Bob-omb (Course 1, Power Stars 1 and 4) A giant Bob-omb with a moustache and crown. Acts as he does in the original Super Mario 64 and now can throw Bob-ombs.
  • King Whomp (Course 2, Power Star 1) A giant Whomp with a crown. Attacks enemies by smashing down on them.
  • Big Boo (Course 5, Power Stars 1, 2 and 5) A giant Boo that on his first two appearances does not appear untill enough boos have been killed.
  • Big Bully (Course 7, Power Stars 1 and 2) A giant Bully. Weighs more than a regular Bully, and hits harder than one as well.
  • Ancient Hands (Course 8, Power Star 4) Two large hands with eyes that guard a Power Star inside of the pyramid. Also Known as Eyerok.
  • Ice Bully (Course 10, Power Star 2) A large bully made out of ice.
  • Giant Wiggler (Course 13, Power Star 6) A huge Wiggler which turns red for a brief period then turns back to its normal yellow and turns small.
  • Goomboss (Mario) A giant Goomba that grows bigger every time he gets hit. He is holding Mario captive behind the 8 Star door in the minigame room.
  • Big Boo (Luigi) A giant boo with the ability to turn invisible and breathe fire. (He can't do both at the same time.) He is holding Luigi captive. He isn't the boo that appears on Big Boo's Haunt, because he wears a crown. (And the Big Boo's Haunt boo doesn't.)
  • Chief Chilly (Wario) A giant version of the already large Ice Bully, with an ice moustache and crown. He is holding Wario captive.

Minigames

One of the new features of Super Mario 64 DS are the minigames. It offers 9 minigames for each character, adding up to 36 minigames. These minigames largely take advantage of the touch screen of the Nintendo DS. The player starts with 8 minigames, and the rest are unlocked in the single player adventure by catching various rabbits, similar to the rabbit MIPS in the original game. Each rabbit gives the player one key to the drawer in Princess Peach's rec room, which allows one more minigame to be played.

Multiplayer

In Mario's multiplayer mode, up to four people can participate in a capture-the-flag style game. Everyone rushes around collecting stars and coins, and the player with the most stars at the end of the alotted time wins. All players start off as Yoshi (player one is green, player two is red, player three is blue player four is yellow,) but Mario, Luigi, and Wario caps can be found in the stages, allowing players to switch. Only one Super Mario 64 DS cartridge is necessary for multiplayer matches; other players' DS units must download the necessary data. Also, all four characters can fly in multiplayer mode while in adventure mode, only Mario can fly.
