The game

Atlanta opened the scoring with a 32-yard field goal on its first drive of the game, but Denver immediately countered with a touchdown drive, where fullback Howard Griffith scored from a yard out. But Broncos tight end Shannon Sharpe was injured on that first drive and did not return.

With the score 10-3 in the second quarter, Elway, starting from his own 20-yard line, faked a handoff to Davis and fired a deep pass to Rod Smith, who took it all the way for a touchdown. After another Falcons field goal, the score at halftime was 17-6 for Denver.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Broncos continued to dominate the Falcons. Atlanta quarterback Chris Chandler was intercepted twice on the Falcons's first two drives in the fourth quarter (Atlanta committed four total turnovers in the game), each setting up Denver touchdowns (by Griffith and Elway). After the Elway's touchdown, the Falcons finally scored when Tim Dwight returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards.

With Denver leading 34-13 after scoring a field goal, Atlanta scored again when Terrance Mathis caught a 3-yard touchdown pass with 2:04 to play. The Falcons then recovered the ensuing onside kick after that. But Denver's Tyrone Braxton recovered a fumble with 1:30 left to seal the victory.
