The game

On their first drive, the Packers drove 76-yards, scoring on a Antonio Freeman 22-yard touchdown pass from Brett Favre. But the Broncos responded by driving 58 yards in 10 plays, scoring on Davis' 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game, 7-7. Then on the second play of the Packers next drive, Denver defensive back Tyrone Braxton intecepted a pass from Favre. The Broncos converted the turnover into a score with a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback John Elway on the first play of the second quarter to take the lead 14-7.

On the Packers ensuing possesion, Broncos safety Steve Atwater. sacked Favre, forcing a fumble, and defensive end Neil Smith recovered it on the Packers 33-yard line. The Broncos were unable to get a first down, but kicker Jason Elam kicked a 51-yard field goal, the second longest in Super Bowl history, and increased their lead to 17-7. After exchanging punts, Green Bay cut the deficit to 17-14 by driving 95 yards in 17 plays, taking 7:26 off the clock, and scoring on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Favre to tight end Mark Chmura with just 12 seconds left in the half.

Green Bay tied the game early in the third quarter after Tyrone Williams forced and recovered Davis' fumble deep in Broncos territory, and kicker Ryan Longwell made a 27-yard field goal. Later in the quarter, Denver regained the lead, 24-17, on a 13 play, 92-yard drive with another 1-yard touchdown run by Davis. Receiver Antonio Freeman then fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Denver defender Tim McKyer recovered it at the Packers 22-yard line. But Packers safety Eugene Robinson intercepted a pass from Elway in the end zone on the Broncos first play after the turnover.

After the interception, the Packers then marched 80 yards in just 4 plays, 3 of them passes to Freeman, to tie it up once again 1:28 into the fourth quarter, with Freeman's 13-yard touchdown reception.

Both teams defense tightened up, forcing 2 punts. But the Broncos got great field position after Green Bay punter Craig Hentrich punted the ball 39 yards to the Packers 49-yard line with 3:27 left in the game. Packers linebacker Darrius Holland tackled Davis on the next play, but committed a 15-yard facemask penalty, moving the ball to the 32-yard line. Two plays later, Elway completed a 23-yard pass to fullback Howard Griffith. A holding penalty then pushed the Broncos back to the 18-yard line, but then Davis rushed 17 yards to the 1-yard line with just 1:47 left on the clock. And on the next play he scored his third rushing touchdown with 1:45 remaining, giving the Broncos a 31-24 lead.

Freeman returned the Broncos kickoff 22 yards to the 30-yard line, and the Packers advanced to the Broncos 35-yard line with 1:04 left in the game, aided by passes to running back Dorsey Levens for gains of 22 and 13 yards on the next 2 plays, moving the ball to the Broncos 35 yard line . After a 4-yard pass to Levens, Favre's next 2 passes fell incomplete. On fourth down, Denver defensive back John Mobley broke up a pass intended for Chmura, and the Broncos ran out the rest of the clock to win the game.

Elway finished the game with 12 out of 22 pass completions, for 123 yards and 1 interception. He was also the Broncos second leading rusher behind Davis with 17 rushing yards and a touchdown on 5 carries. Levens was Green Bay's leading rusher with 90 rushing yards, and was their second leading receiver with 56 yards on 6 pass receptions. Both Freeman and Favre had outstanding performances for the second Super Bowl game in a row. Favre completed 25 out of 42 passes for 256 yards and 3 touchdowns, with 1 interception. Freeman caught 9 passes for 126 yards, 2 touchdowns receptions, and also another 104 yards on 6 kickoff returns, giving him 230 total yards.
