Trivia

  • As a result of Sunderland's somewhat unusual footballing history, the phrase "Doing a Sunderland" has been independently coined in many areas, often with wildly different meanings. "Doing a Sunderland" can refer to having an extremely good cup run (a reference to Sunderland's 1973 FA Cup win against Leeds), being relegated in a humiliating fashion (as when the club produced the worst performance in premiership history in 2003), or gaining promotion after a spectacularly successful season in a lower grade (as when Sunderland won the league with 105 points in 1999).
