The newspaper takes a generally liberal outlook. It was the first broadsheet newspaper in Ireland to successfully experiment with colour supplements. This is reflected in the layout of the newspaper today: it is distributed in several sections, including a news section, Business, Sport, ArtLife, Property, and a magazine section. The paper is especially known as the home of Paul Howard's Ross O'Carroll-Kelly column.

The newspaper was founded in 1980 by John Mulcahy. It collapsed in 1982, but returned to print a year later, backed and edited by Vincent Browne. Sir Anthony O'Reilly's's Independent News and Media (then called Independent Newspapers plc) acquired a 29.9% stake in the company. They then made an offer to increase this to a majority stake, however the Minister for Industry and Commerce, Desmond O'Malley, blocked the takeover attempt in 1992. Despite this, it is believed by many Irish business journalists that Independent Newspapers effectively control the Tribune via a series of loans. Matt Cooper was the editor of the newspaper from 1996 to 2002. Under his direction the newspaper became known for investigative journalism. The future of the newspaper is thought to be uncertain.
