The book begins when the girls are 12 years old and Caitlin invites Vix to come to Martha's Vineyard with her over the summer. Vix, who is shy, is confused as to why popular, beautiful Caitlin would ask to join her. Vix accepts, after begging her rigid mother, Tawny. On the Vineyard, Vix meets Sharkey, Caitlin's quiet older brother and her father, Lambert (Lamb for short). They have many adventures, including discovering "The Power" when they are Vixen and Cassandra. They also meet two older boys, Bru and Von. Caitlin and Vix are enthralled by the boys. Caitlin swears they will both fall in love with her when she is older.

The next summer, the girls are more mature and meet Abby, Lamb's girlfriend, and her sullen teenage son, Daniel. Towards the end of the summer, Gus Klein, Daniel's friend from home comes to the Vineyard and Caitlin and Victoria dub them the "Chicago Boys." The next summer, the adventures continue. Tawny drops by to visit The Countess, her boss. Tawny talks with Vix seriously. A serious turn for Vix is when The Chicago Boys make fun of some mentally retarded kids, and Vix yells at them. Gus kisses her and apologizes.
