Student press in the United States is limited by the powers permitted to the school administration by United States Supreme Court decisions such as Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District and Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, in spite of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. Under these decisions, the school admistrators, such as the principal, superintendent, school board members, or their subordinates, are allowed prior review and censorship of any school publication that receives school funding. Furthermore, Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier established that student publications aren't "true" public forums (in contrast with "real" newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times or Newsweek), and therefore aren?t entitled to the full rights granted by the First Amendment.
