Stronghold (Canadian political term)

A Stronghold in Canadian Politics is a slang term for a riding in which a party consistently wins by large margins and is considered a safe riding for that party despite who their candidate is. Typically Canadian Political Parties do not campaign heavily in Strongholds, prefering to direct funds towards contestable ridings. The best example of a Stronghold is the Riding of Wild Rose in southern Alberta. The incumbent (Myron Thompson) won 71% compared to 13% for his closest rival in the 2004 Federal Election , giving him the largest margin of victory in Canada.
