String Quartet No. 1 in D major
The first of Tchaikovsky's three string quartets. They all have interest but none quite achieve the reticence and reserved beauty of true quartet style.

The Andante cantabile movement of this was founded on a folk-song the composer heard whistled by a house painter, and became deservedly famous after previous failures.
