The song was written during singer Freddie Mercury's time with a short-lived college band called Wreckage. Queen played it live as early as 1972, and finally in late 1974 they decided to use it for the album. Since no one could remember who wrote it, it was credited to all four members of the band.

The music is very heavy metal based, and unusually fast for the pre-punk rock era, making it a pre-curser to the sub-genres of speed and thrash metal. Songs such as this one influenced metal bands for years to come. The lyrics are about gangsters - Al Capone is even mentioned in the song.
