Steven Kerckhoff

Steven Kerckhoff is a professor of mathematics at Stanford University, who works on hyperbolic geometry and Teichmüller spaces. He proved a 1932 conjecture by Jakob Nielsen. Given a surface, we can divide the homeomorphisms of the surface to itself in isotopy classes. The conjecture asks whether a finite group of these classes of a surface can be lifted back to an isomorphic finite group of homeomorphisms.
