In the original version of Wonder Woman's origin story, Steve Trevor was an intelligence officer in the United States Army during World War II whose plane crashed in the isolated homeland of the Amazons. He was nursed back to health by Amazon princess Diana, who fell in love with him and followed him when he returned to the outside world. After Diana adopted the guise of Wonder Woman, Steve Trevor's role was essentially that of the traditional superhero's love interest - getting kidnapped and rescued a lot, and pining after the flying one in the red-and-blue outfit while completely failing to notice that the meek bespectacled co-worker looks oddly familiar.

The concept of the character has been revised several times over the years: in the current (Post-Crisis) version of DC continuity, Diana and Steve Trevor, being considerably older than the Amazon, have never had a romantic relationship, although her interest in the world beyond her homeland was still precipitated by his sudden vertical arrival.
