Stockman was born in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In 1992, Stockman ran as a Republican for the House of Representatives against Jack Brooks. Stockman was unsuccessful in his campaign. But in 1994, Stockman was successful in defeating 42 year incumbent, Chairman of Judiciary committee, Congressman Jack Brooks. On the day of the Oklahoma City Bombing, Stockman's congressional office supposedly received a fax from the Michigan militia which made a reference to the bombing. As it turns out that as many as 50 other officials and politicians received the same fax but only Stockman gave it to the authorities. As one source pointed out, "no good deed goes unpunished." After Republicans took over the House, Congressman Stockman was a leader among his fellow conservatives. He authored a bill to eliminated 3 full committees and 27 subcommittees, he was also the co-author of ?Megan?s Law?. Stockman came in first on Election Day in November but the Texas Supreme Court ordered another election. In a heavily Democratic district Congressman Stockman on Dec 10, 1996 (his wedding anniversary) lost by a narrow margin. He was defeated in 1996 by Nick Lampson who is currently running against Tom DeLay (R) of Sugar Land.
