He was first in a band named Influence which later renamed to Gypsy's Kiss. Later he joined the band Smiler, of which all the band members were several years older than himself. He ended up leaving Smiler to create Iron Maiden, as the members of Smiler made it clear that they did not care for a bassist who leapt around the stage and wrote songs. Steve Harris got the name Iron Maiden from seeing an iron maiden (the torture instrument) in the movie The Man in the Iron Mask.
