A musical called Steel Pier was named after that pier and written by the songwriting team of Kander and Ebb. It opened on Broadway on April 24, 1998 and closed on June 28, 1998, playing just 76 performances (plus 33 previews). It starred Karen Ziemba, Daniel McDonald, Gregory Harrison, Debra Monk, and Kristin Chenoweth. It received eleven Tony nominations but did not win any Tony awards.

The play is set at a dance marathon in Atlantic City in 1933. A stunt pilot falls in love with a woman dancing at the marathon.

The plot has a dramatic twist that shrewd audience members will pick up on rather quickly if they pay attention to some of the early scenes. However, the twist is spelled out towards the end of the second act when things start to unravel for the emcee.
