State school
State school is an expression used in Australia, the United Kingdom and other countries to distinguish schools provided by the government from public schools which are in fact private institutions. These private institutions prefer the term independent school. In Scotland public school is still used by many to refer to state schools.

In the United States, state school is a colloquial term for state university, a college or university in a state university system. Public school refers to schools which are funded and/or run by a governmental entity.
