When the Star Wars series reagained popularity in 1991 with the publication of Timothy Zahn's enormously popular [[Heir to the Empire and his eventual The Thrawn Trilogy|Thrawn Trilogy, Lucasfilm Ltd. decided something had to be done to organize the increasingly large collection of media which chronicled the Star Wars universe. So, it was decided that a system of canon would be developed which would organize the materials into what was and wasn't fit for the Star Wars story.
