Although Stanford University is renowned as a major research center, it also has a reputation among some American physicians for providing mediocre training to its students, interns, and residents. The contended problem is that it is located in a peaceful suburban environment. Thus, physicians based at Stanford University Medical Center are simply less likely to encounter the severe gunshot wounds, blunt force trauma, and acute mental illness that make up much of the daily workload at inner-city teaching hospitals like Johns Hopkins Hospital. It should be noted first that there are nearby neighboorhoods (ie East Palo Alto) that do not have the stereotypical suburban patient base. As of 2005, there are two free clinic operated by students and physicans that offer services to underserved areas. Rotations occur not only at the Stanford Hospital and Lucile Packard's Children hospital, but at other locations such as Kaiser.
