McCabe played 39 test matches for Australia, and led a noted career as an attacking batsman. Of his six test centuries, two became particularly famous. At Sydney, in the first test of the Bodyline series of 1932, McCabe scored 187 runs not out, in an match where no other Australian batsman passed fifty. He was the only Australian in this innings to successfully and consistently employ the hook shot against England's short-pitched bowling.
